Highlights:

Amber Alert is a nationwide program to find missing children quickly

We feature Amber Alert on our website as a service to youth and parents

What is the Amber Alert?

Amber Alert is an Office of Justice Program, a part of the U.S. Department of Justice.  “Amber” stands for America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response, and is also the name of a young girl from Texas who was kidnapped and murdered.  If a child has been abducted and the case meets Amber Alert criteria, law enforcement notifies broadcasters and transportation officials.

Amber Alerts interrupt regular broadcasting on TV, radio, and highway signs, and can also be printed on lottery tickets, and sent to wireless devices and the internet.  A description of the missing child, captor, and/or the captor’s vehicle is sent out.

Are Amber Alerts in One Area of the Country Only?

No, Amber Alerts now exist in all 50 states.  Amber Alerts can cross state and local jurisdictions.

Does It Work?

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, “over 200 children have been recovered due to the Amber Alert.”

Why Do You Have Amber Alert on Your Website?

Because children are our nation’s greatest resource and there is nothing more important than their safety and well-being.  People rarely have their television or radio on all day.  At work, at home, or even out and about (with wireless internet), it is easy to check out an Amber Alert on our website.

How Can I Get Involved?

While checking out our Scout Programs, take a look at the Amber Alert link.  There you will find a description of any children recently abducted and any other information available.  For more information, please visit http://www.amberalert.gov/faqs.html.
