Financial Education PDF Print E-mail

In our effort to help our Scouts develop as whole people, we provide our Scouts with needed information in an exciting way, called FUN with a purpose.

One of the ways in which we help our Scouts is to find gaps in their education and discover a FUN new way to fill them.  boy with piggy bankFinancial education is often ignored by youth programs and formal education alike.  Despite an ever-rising number of young people attending higher education, most get out of school already crippled by credit card debt, and a large percentage of adults cannot answer basic questions about their finances or even balance a check book.

As with everything we do, we have taken a normally boring subject (even for adults) and made it FUN and exciting.  We encourage our Scouts’ financial education by putting them in touch with people, who like Guests at our activity buffets, who make subjects interesting.

Our Scouts invite financial advisors, insurance professionals, bankers, and other experts to instill financial responsibility in our Scouts through learning-by-doing.  Sessions are action-oriented adventures, impressing upon our Scouts the value of financial responsibility.

Interactive sessions can include having our Scouts balance a checkbook, see how they will receive interest on their bank accounts, and identify ways to stretch their allowance or savings.  Scouts acquire knowledge and patience by understanding they cannot purchase everything they want, or that is in their best interest to wait.

For North Star Scouts, other guests can include financial aid assistance advisors from universities and automobile insurance professionals.

We want our Scouts to develop the responsibility and resourcefulness to help them lifelong!
