A Responsible Citizen PDF Print E-mail

The Scout Programs of Adventure Scouts USA encourage our Scouts to be responsible citizens by standing up for what they believe in and by participating in activities of service to the greater community. We all see things about the world we wish we could change, improve, or support. It can be difficult for adults, much less for youth, to have the confidence in their own ideas to take responsibility for their own citizenship.

Our Scouts start out in the Rising Star Scout Program at the age of five. What type of world is possible when youth are taking responsibility for their own citizenship and are actually participating in the democratic process by voting, all by the age of five? Being a responsible citizen is a concept our Scouts grow up with.

Our Scouts Make an Impact

Our Scout Programs believe wholeheartedly that a small number of people can make an impact. We encourage our Scouts to develop responsible citizenship by their participation in their community including the lobbying for legislation relevant to them. Our Scouts, where legally allowed, volunteer at polling places as one of our nationwide service projects. Our Scouts choose, organize, and lead their own programs. Because our Scouts vote for their own activities, they develop a respect for the democratic process.

Our Scouts Display Responsible Citizenship Everyday

Our Scouts obey the law and always consider their own safety and the safety of others before acting. Our Scouts honor the work of police and fire personnel and do their best to make life easier and safer for everyone.

Our Scouts honor their country. girl with flagWe encourage our Scouts to speak up when they see an injustice, and to become involved in the process. Our Scouts are passionate about the world they live in and find ways to be of service to the greater community and to the nation.

Our Scouts respect elected office and the democratic process. We encourage our Scouts to work within the system to see their hopes and dreams realized, and to have respect for the opinions of others, even if they disagree.

We encourage responsible citizenship in our Scouts, and we instill in them a desire to participate in the political process. Our Scouts gain an understanding of the political process and develop an appreciation that it is possible for them to make a difference. As a consequence of our Scouts acquiring the skill of critical thinking, they have the opportunity to think about the kind of country they want to live in, and what the future will hold for them.
