I Want to Spread the Word Print

In order for the team to grow, more people need to know about it. One way we spread the word and find potential Scouts is simply letting people in the community know about our Scout Programs.

1 -- Talk to people

• A great way to spread the word is to let your family, friends, neighbors, parents of children your child goes to school with, members of the church, temple, community or service organization you may belong to, or anyone you think might be interested.
• If you would like, you can also speak with community leaders and spread the word to churches, temples, schools, parent/teacher groups and community or service organizations you do not belong to.

Below is a basic script for when you are speaking to someone:

"Adventure Scouts USA is the only fully nondiscriminatory Scout Program in the United States, with three Scout Program, all coed, for ages 2-18. Our Scouts choose, organize, and lead their meetings, programs and activities, doing what is FUN for them.”

You’ll want to put it in your own words. The main points to get across are:

We’re nondiscriminatory
• We’re coed
• We have three Scout Programs for ages 2 to 18
• Our Scouts choose their own activities

If you’re not sure about something or you don’t understand something, please give us a call before you speak to someone so we can clarify it for you. We’re here until 10pm EST.

When speaking to someone, you should know quickly whether they might be interested. If you tell the person our Scout Programs are coed and they say, “that’s a stupid idea, I’d never let my kids join”, you can be relatively certain that telling them more would be a waste of your time and theirs. You can’t please everyone and like anything else in life, there will be people who are interested and people who are not.

2 – Fliers

Does your child bring home fliers distributed by the school from community groups? If so, we can reach many children and families at once through fliers distributed by the school. We need some information in order for the school to distribute them. We need to know:

• If there is a pre-approval process before fliers can be sent home so we can follow the school’s rules.
• If the flier needs to contain certain text. For example, your school might require the following statement or something similar to be on the flier: “The school neither endorses nor sponsors the organization or activity represented on this flier.”
• The number of students in the school so we can make sure every student gets a copy.

A bigger team is likely to take shape within a week of sending out fliers.

3 – Bring fliers to churches, temples, parent/teacher groups and community or service organizations, particularly groups you belong to.

4 – Place announcements in papers and newsletters

• There are many paid and free newspapers available in most areas. Ask if they have a calendar or events section.
• Your local church, temple, parent/teacher group, community or service organization may have a newsletter. Ask if they can include information about the new team.

Below is basic script that you can use to place an announcement in the paper:

“Adventure Scouts USA is the only fully nondiscriminatory Scout Program in the United States, with three Scout Program, all coed, for ages 2-18. The Scouts of Adventure Scouts USA choose, organize, and lead their meetings, programs and activities, doing what is FUN for them.”

5 – Put fliers on bulletin boards where families and youth will see them

Such as:
• Parks
• Family restaurants
• Children’s sporting events

6 – If you have a blog, you can mention the new team there

Local area websites are also good places to post information.

Below is basic script that you can use to post to a blog:

“Adventure Scouts USA is the only fully nondiscriminatory Scout Program in the United States, with three Scout Program, all coed, for ages 2-18. The Scouts of Adventure Scouts USA choose, organize, and lead their meetings, programs and activities, doing what is FUN for them.”

7 – If you have any other ideas or suggestion, we want to hear them! Let us know and we will approve your idea immediately and you can get started!
